Who says book research is tedious?
Northern Italy boasts some of the most beautiful castles in the world. My recent trip provided just the inspiration I needed to push The Kingdom of Adeleya into high gear. Spending three nights at Castello Di Pavone was a dream come true. Who wouldn’t be inspired when staying in the tower of an ancient castle? Breath taking views, stunning architecture, and food worth wrecking any diet for rounded out the stay.
As a little girl I snapped picture of my food; thanksgiving, christmas, etc. Years later, I found the food pictures provoked stronger memories than the static images of people and places. I could smell my Mom’s apple pie, taste her fudge. Even as an adult, I have continued the tradition. Of course, I sometimes get a few strange glances as I pose my food in the best light, but the memories are worth it!
Our writing journeys took us to Lake Orta and Isola San Giulio. We fueled up on some local pasta (i.e. heaven on a plate) and then began exploring.
As a writer, I have found it is often the tiniest details that make a scene come to life. On this day, the details bombarded my senses. Upon our arrival on Isola San Guilio, we were greeted with a creepy cobweb door. Luckily, we avoided finding out what was behind it, but I can tell you the experience made its way into the book as part of the dungeons. The cobwebs flapped in the breeze and even though my stomach turned with pins and needles, I could not look away. After exploring the island, I found a comfortable spot at one of the wells and wrote the afternoon away!

Visiting the Harry Potter world in Universal Studios, Orlando, Florida has become a family tradition. These photos are from our visit last week. I already miss the magic!
For those of you about to embark on the journey, it is not magical creatures you need to fear, but the crowds. The best way to survive is to go early (preferably early admission as an on-site guest). Rainy days or afternoon showers also provide a small window of opportunity to avoid the rush. Don’t forget to enjoy a glass of butter beer along the way!
In just five days, my first novel will be published!

Tomatoes with fresh basil, mozzarella, and balsamic glaze rounded off with fresh baked french bread.
If only we could enjoy life as freely as our dogs.
